Library Card Sign-up Month 2018

A library card provides endless opportunities to transform the school year

ACKLEY, IOWA – As students prepare to head back to school, there is one essential school supply that requires no shopping and doesn’t cost a penny – it’s a library card.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.

A library card is one of the most cost effective back-to-school supplies. Resources at the library are available to anyone with a library card.  We have books for all ages, audio books on CD’s,  DVD’s, newspapers, magazines.  The BRIDGES Iowa library consortium allows you to download and read (or listen) to books from the comfort of your home on your own device 24/7.  We regularly have our After School Friends on Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m. when school is released early, Toddler Time on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 10 a.m., adult book discussions and from time to time adult programs.  Computers and free wyfy access are available to all!

Throughout the school year, our library offers a variety of programs to stimulate an interest in reading and learning.  Story hours like Toddler Time expose young children to the joy of reading and encourage school readiness, along with our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge while older children have access to technology and digital tools such as Gale and Credo links as well as computers, printers, free wyfy and the help from library staff to use those resources.

This year, Disney’s the Incredibles are Library Card Sign-up Month honorary chairs, helping to promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries and librarians transform lives and communities through education. During September, the Ackley Public Library will host a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House on September 22nd.  Author Rena Olsen will be here at 10 a.m., Ribbon Cutting at 11:15 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  We are celebrating the completion of the new handicapped sidewalk, landscaping and outdoor seating as well at the 85th Birthday of the Library!  We have been blessed with community support.

This resource is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by State Library of Iowa.
