August 5, 2013
The library is a cool place to hang out in August, so come join us – use a computer, read a newspaper, check out a new magazine. We have a new selection of Early Reader Books in levels 1 – 3 to get your kids back in the reading groove before school starts. Tweens/Teens need to check out these new series: Shark Wars by E J Altbacker, Gregor by Suzanne Collins, Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz, Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa, Beautiful Creatures by Stohr and Middle School by James Patterson.
Morning Book Discussion group will meet on August 12th at 11 a.m. Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks will be the topic this month.
We have started an Evening Book Discussion group and the group consensus was to meet every other month on the 3rd Wednesday at 7 p.m. The book for September 18th will be Another Piece of My Heart by Jane Green. Books are available at the library and all are encouraged to submit possible titles for future discussions.
Iowa Library services has announced that the Ackley Public Library has met the conditions for state accreditation as outlined in “In Service to Iowa” and receive a higher rate of compensation through Iowa Library Services’ Enrich Iowa program. This accreditation is valid through June 30, 2016. Iowa’s accredited public libraries are recognized for being responsive to their communities and for exhibiting excellence in their provision of library services. Iowa libraries play key roles in workforce and economic development, lifelong learning and e-government activities. Iowans use their libraries to find jobs, do homework, locate a good book to read, research medical conditions, access government information, and more. State Librarian Mary Wegner said: “The director and board of trustees of the Ackley Public Library and the city of Ackley are to be commended for this achievement and their commitment to excellence in public library services for their community.”
We need to give a special THANK YOU to all those who help support our summer reading program! This year we were able to expand our programs to include a Toddler Read and a Tween Program along with our Dig Into Reading activities. Every child in attendance was able to take home a book to keep as well as some nice prizes. We also appreciate the adult help we received and helping hands from the parents, day care providers and parents who took the time to bring the children to the library. Special Thanks goes to: Ackley Chiropractic Clinic, Ackley State Bank, Casey’s General Store, Dollar General, Eichmeier Motor, Farm Bureau Financial Service, Green Belt Bank & Trust, Gus & Docs, Ibeling Insurance Services, , McDowell & Sons, Nailmeister, Pizza Ranch, Sietsema Funeral Home and Triple T Meats.
